Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra: Everything We Know About the New Builder-Class PC
Microsoft is sharing official details about its first builder-class personal computer.
Design and Display
Microsoft initially teased the Surface Laptop Ultra earlier this year, positioning it as its most powerful hardware release yet. At an event in San Francisco, the company offered a complete look at the flagship notebook, highlighting its bright Mini-LED display and NVIDIA RTX Spark processor.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is designed as a high-performance system aimed at developers and AI researchers rather than typical consumers or casual web users, earning the classification of a builder-class PC.
Hardware and Ports
The laptop features a 15-inch Mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio and up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness. It includes a haptic touchpad that is 30 percent larger than standard 15-inch Surface notebooks, alongside ports such as USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, a 3.5mm audio jack, and a full-size SD card reader. A new port called Magnetic Connect combines magnetic charging with a traditional USB-C interface to transmit power, video, and data simultaneously.
Performance and Specifications
Powered by NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, the Surface Laptop Ultra supports up to 128GB of unified memory and delivers up to one petaflop of FP4 AI compute. It provides 2.5 times the thermal capacity of previous Microsoft notebooks and maintains 99 percent of its maximum performance when running on battery power. Microsoft claims significant performance advantages over MacBook Pro models equipped with M5 Pro chips in video generation, image creation, and token processing.

Two main configurations are available: one featuring an RTX Spark N1X chip with an 18-core CPU, and a higher-end model with a 20-core CPU. Base models include 32GB of RAM, scaling up to 128GB with the 20-core processor. Built-in SSD storage reaches up to 2TB, and the storage drive is user-upgradable.
Pricing and Availability
The aluminum chassis measures 18mm (0.7 inches) thick, weighs 4.5 pounds, and comes in platinum and nightfall color options.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is available for pre-order starting at $2,599. Additionally, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Dev Box, starting at $5,999.
