Financing Plans for Rubin Hardware

SpaceX is reportedly looking to raise $40 billion to acquire Nvidia AI processors in a bid to expand its compute capabilities. The financing could combine $10 billion in bank loans with $30 billion in investment-grade debt and may be completed in 2027, though discussions are still at an early stage and there is no guarantee that a transaction will materialize. If completed, the funds would provide advanced Nvidia Rubin generation hardware.

Assuming that xAI obtains Vera Rubin NVL72 systems at approximately $8 million per unit, a $40 billion investment could yield roughly 5,000 machines containing nearly 360,000 Nvidia Rubin AI accelerators. It remains unclear whether this budget represents the entirety of xAI's planned compute capacity spending for 2027.

Existing Infrastructure

The scale of xAI's Nvidia deployments remains substantial. Elon Musk previously indicated that the Colossus 2 cluster houses 110,000 Nvidia GB200 accelerators alongside 440,000 GB300 devices.

Debt Structure and Lenders

SpaceX intends to secure approximately $10 billion from banks and raise another $30 billion through the investment-grade debt market. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead the financing arrangement, with bond manager Pimco among the lenders discussing potential participation.

Apollo already maintains significant exposure to AI infrastructure financing. The firm previously arranged a $7 billion financing agreement for xAI's Colossus 2 data center near Memphis, and Nvidia has collaborated with major financial institutions to establish platforms targeting massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

None of the parties involved have officially commented on the potential deal.
